DOE Closes all Oahu Public Schools Friday, August 8 due to Hurricane Iselle

BREAKING: DOE announces all public schools on Oahu, Kauai to close Friday due to Hurricane Iselle

Posted: Aug 07, 2014 9:31 AM HST
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi announced today that all public schools on Oahu and Kauai will be closed Friday in anticipation of Hurricane Iselle, which is expected to impact the island as a tropical storm.

It was previously announced that all schools on the Big Island and Maui County will be closed both Thursday and Friday.

At 8 a.m. Thursday, the most recent storm update available, Hurricane Iselle was located about 255 miles east-southeast of Hilo and was moving west-northwest at 17 miles per hour. It had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, weakened slightly from the 2 a.m. forecast, with higher gusts of up to 98 miles per hour. Iselle remains a Category 1 hurricane.

On the forecast track, the center of Iselle is expected to pass near the center of the Big Island near Cape Kumukahi on Thursday night, then pass just south of the smaller islands Friday. Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Iselle is expected to be at tropical storm strength as it passes near or over the Big Island.

City & County of Honolulu's Evacuation shelter list in preparation for Iselle

Department of Emergency Management releases Oahu evacuation
shelter list in preparation for Iselle
Honolulu— The Department of Emergency Management advises Oahu residents that the following American Red Cross hurricane shelters will be available and open for evacuees on Thursday, August 7 at 10:00 p.m.
SCHOOLS ADDRESS AREA COMPLEX PET
Campbell High School 91-980 North Rd Ewa Beach Kapolei
Kaimuki High School 2705 Kaimuki Avenue Honolulu Kaimuki YES
Kaiser High School 511 Lunalilo Home Road Honolulu Kaiser
McKinley High School 1039 South King St Honolulu McKinley
Castle High School 45-386 Kaneohe Bay Dr Kaneohe Castle
Mililani High School 95-1200 Meheula Parkway Mililani Mililani
Pearl City High School   2100 Hookiekie Street Pearl City Pearl City YES
Waialua High School/Intermediate 67-160 Farrington Highway Waialua Waialua YES
Nanakuli High School/Middle 89-980 Nanakuli Avenue Waianae Nanakuli YES
BYU-HAWAII 55-220 Kulanui Street Laie Kahuku YES

The above shelters are designated as official shelter locations by the City and County of Honolulu. A hurricane evacuation shelter should be your refuge of last resort if you have absolutely no where else to go.

Who should evacuate? Residents in the coastal evacuation zones as shown in the yellow tabbed disaster preparedness section of your telephone directory.  Residents living in older homes built before 1995, on exposed ridgelines and anyone living in an area prone to or with a history of flooding.  Remember, if you choose to evacuate to a shelter you must bring all of your disaster supplies with you.

If you live in a home built after 1995 to current hurricane standards and you are not located in a coastal evacuation or flood zone you should consider Sheltering-in-Place in an interior room on a lower floor without windows.

Transportation

Special evacuation shuttles will begin operating at 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night to serve the designated shelter locations. If you need transportation to an evacuation shelter TheBus will provide free transportation. These buses will display an EVACUATION sign. Riders need only flag a bus down anywhere along the route they are traveling and they will be taken to the nearest evacuation shelter. Riders will be allowed to bring one bag and pets as long as they are on a leash or in a pet crate or carrier. Designated evacuation routing for each of the ten shelters will be issued soon.

Before leaving for a hurricane shelter, residents should close windows and doors and shut off/unplug all electrical items and shut off utilities if told to do so.

Residents bringing pets to designated pet friendly shelters will need to provide extra food and water for their pet, a pet carrier/cage for each pet that is large enough for them to turn around in as well as cleaning supplies.  You will be expected to assist with your pets care.

Keep in mind that the American Red Cross does not allow weapons, illicit drugs, alcohol, and smoking in shelters

Kapolei & Makakilo NEEDs your help. especially since our representative has gone AWOL from the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (OMPO) Policy Meetings.

In case you did not know ONLY Part One of the Kapolei Interchange is done.

Help us SAVE this project by sending an email to OahuMPO@OahuMPO.org and dotpao@hawaii.gov  and let the policy makers know that you object to this deletion.

For more information about the project see below. For attendance records please visit http://www.oahumpo.org/about-mpo/committees/policy-committee/

Huricane Preparedness - 7-Day Disaster Supply Kit

7-Day Disaster Supply Kit

Your disaster supply kit should contain enough of the following items to last for 7-days:

Water - One gallon of water per person per day for seven days for drinking and sanitation
Food - Non-perishable food that does not require cooking.  Popular local foods such as Spam, corned beef and Vienna sausage
Eating Utensils – Plates, mess kits, forks and chop sticks.  Don’t forget a non-electric can opener for canned foods
Radio - Battery-powered or hand crank radio with NOAA Weather alert
Light - Flashlight and/or a portable fluorescent or LED light
Spare batteries - Check annually
First Aid – Get a first aid kit and consider enrolling in a certified first aid, CPR and AED course

Dust Mask – Helps to filter contaminated air
Sanitation - Moist towelettes, toilet paper, 5-gallon bucket, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Tools - Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, duct tape
Maps -  Local area maps
Prescription – Special medications and glasses
Baby - Infant formula and diapers

Emergency Information

In addition to being prepared residents should maintain a high level of awareness anytime an active tropical cyclone system is near the Hawaiian Islands.  The Department of Emergency Management will issue Emergency Public Information over TV and radio. In addition residents can receive emergency information via:

NOAA Weather Radio - NOAA Weather Alert Radios can notify you 24 hours a day to hazards in our area including severe weather, hurricanes and tropical storms and tsunami events.   In addition many of these units can activate other warning devices such as a strobe light to provide a visual warning.  These radios are available from many Oahu electronics and department stores.

NIXLE Messaging - DEM highly recommends signing up to receive emergency email and text messages sent directly to your cell phone from Nixle.  Go to www.nixle.com/dem to set up your account.   Standard text messaging charges may apply.

Social Media - DEM will also issue information updates via Twitter www.twitter.com/Oahu_DEM and Facebook www.facebook.com/OahuDEMNOTE: DEM Twitter and Facbook pages should not be used to request emergency assistance.

DHHL is Building Communities with BRIGHT Futures

I just got back from the ground breaking for Ka‘uluokaha‘i - It was so good to see the continuation of Prince Kuhio's vision of ensuring Hawaiians in their own homes on their own land! DHHL is not just building homes they are building communities with BRIGHT futures!

Want an answer to a question..

Aloha!

Don’t you just hate it when someone tells you one thing in private and then says another thing in public. I guess that is why I like the interviews and public forums during campaigns. That is why I am excited and honored to be invited on The Carroll Cox Show, and Insights on PBS as well as the Community Meet & Greet.

Before I continue I want to thank everyone that called into The Carroll Cox Show, because of the numerous calls what was suppose to be a 1 hour interview turned into a 2 hour interview!

If you missed it you can hear the podcast here: http://carrollcox.com/Show072714.htm

(FYI - Sharon was invited to be on the show but what has been par for the course she was non-responsive.)

Don’t have 2 hours - good news I will be appearing on Insights on PBS Hawaii (CH 10 or Digital HD 1010) this Thursday, July 31 at 8:00 PM . Sharon and Nicole were invited as well & only Nicole is scheduled to appear.

E-mail your questions ahead of time to: insights@pbshawaii.org
Or during the live broadcast call:
973-1000 (Oahu) or
800-283-4847 (Neighbor Islands)

Miss the live show? Watch it on-line the next day at http://www.pbshawaii.org/ourproductions/insight.php

In case you want to know where I stand on any other issues that may not be covered in either of these forums, you have a couple of options:

1. Come to the Community Meet & Greet on Saturday, August 2 from 3 - 5 PM at Kapolei Regional Park. We will have hot dogs and a bouncy house for the kids and then chili & rice and door prizes for the adults. Grand prize is a round of golf for 2 valued at $800.
2. Email - send me your questions and I will respond. (I will post the question and answer on Facebook & Twitter - as well as the campaign website www.votegolojuch.blogspot.com
3. Social media - post your question there and I will provide my answer.
4. There is the good old phone - call me on my cell - 808-358-4417

This is not a campaign gimmick I truly believe all elected officials should be this accessible and this is just another example that differentiates me from my opponent.

Mahalo nui loa for your time and hopefully your support!

Grow Local – Eat Local

Idea for the day:

Grow Local – Eat Local -  When elected one of the bills I will introduce is a tax incentive bill to encourage people to buy locally grown produce.  This would be done by exempting GET charges on all food items locally grown that are purchase for local consumption.

Please tell me what you think about this idea to encourage eating locally grown produce.

My Response to Star Advertiser & Our Campaign

Aloha,

I had hoped that this campaign was going to be about the issues and not false attacks made-up to cause a distraction.  But after yesterday’s Star-Advertiser article I do have to respond to the false accusations made against me by my opponent.

I have also included a quick video about a great interaction I had with fellow neighbor – about the issues and what my campaign is really about. This was such a great interaction that it made my week!

Mahalo for your time and hopefully your support!

HELP Protect Our Aina!

Aloha friends,

I have started a petition calling upon Aerial Banners, Inc. to stop all their illegal activities here on Oahu!We have very strict sign laws here in Hawaii to ensure that the natural beauty of our island is protected. Therefor there is total ban on aerial banners, but even with this ban this company is violating our laws.

Dear Owners of Aerial Banners, Inc.,

We the undersigned do hereby pledge to boycott and/or speak out against any and all companies, organizations, campaigns and/or individuals that use your services as long as you continue to violate the City and County of Honolulu’s ban on aerial advertising.

We find that we have no other alternative given your company’s recent activities to fly aerial banners in the skies over Oahu, which you did even after receiving warnings from the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu Kirk Caldwell. Please honor and respect the laws of the City and County of Honolulu and do not mar the natural beauty of the island of Oahu with your desire to try and make money.

We look forward to you immediately ceasing your activities in the City and County of Honolulu.

Working for ALL

Aloha,

Being a 33-year resident of Makakilo I have seen our community grow into the economic engine that drives our state forward and this has not happened without our growing pains.

What our district needs is a person that will make being their Representative their number one priority and I am that person.
I have volunteered in my district for decades, I know what we need and I know how to make sure we get it. That comes from being the only candidate in this race that has first hand knowledge of how the State works and I will bring that knowledge to the Capitol.

Take the straightening and widening of Fort Barrett Road, which was supposed to begin this year but thanks lack of support by our current representative the project has been delayed.

Education needs to be a priority not just a talking point - the State is about to open its third library and the legislature has failed to appropriate zero funds for any new positions. These are not the actions that support education.

No full-time worker should require social services to survive, which is why I support a Living Wage.

I trust women and women deserve equal pay for equal work.

I support the rail project (Go Rail Go volunteer) and the Ho‘opili project (member of the Ho‘opili Taskforce) – I am not just talk, I am a person of action.

I have a successful track record of getting things done for my communities, all as a volunteer.

I humbly ask for your support!
